What you need to ask your hairdresser before a big change

A good haircut can skyrocket your self-confidence but get the wrong style and it will make you want to cry for days. It’s important to talk to your hairdresser before making a big change.

That’s why for us ladies, going for a chop is such a big deal. A new haircut is something we do not take for granted. We visualise, weigh our style options, and prepare for the night before our appointment.

A hair transformation can make you feel really powerful. It can turn a bad hair day into an ‘I-can-conquer-all’ moment.

To help you get the right cut, here are a few things that you need to consider before you walk into a salon.

1. Determine your face shape

Knowing your face shape is the first step to get closer to the perfect cut. This step is so important but often neglected. To figure out the best look on you, know if you have a square, oval, round, or heart-shaped face. If you have no idea what your shape is or if you’ve never considered your face shape for a haircut before, you can start by checking your jaw line.

Round face: If your jawline is rounded from your chin to your ears
Celebrity counterpart: Christina Ricci, Emma Stone

Oval face: If your chin is somewhat pointy and your jaw slightly goes up at an angle
Celebrity counterpart: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Hudson

Heart shape: If your chin is the pointiest part of your face and your jawline curves in
Celebrity counterpart: Reese Witherspoon, Scarlet Johansson

Your goal would be to determine a hairstyle that will make your face appear more oval and create the most flattering shape. A simple way to find out is to draw your face shape on a piece of paper, draw the hairstyle you want inside the shape and see if it leaves you an oval in the center.

You can also copy some hairstyles from your celebrity face shape counterparts and check with your hairdresser if the style you chose would complement your face shape.

2. Know your hair texture

If you have extra thin hair, you can’t expect to have Beyonce’s voluminous hair texture! Knowing your hair texture will guide you to more achievable hairstyles. Find celebs with hair texture similar to yours and you’ll be amazed with the range of hairstyles you can choose from.

3. Set realistic expectations

It’s easy to get deceived by unrealistic shampoo commercials and magazine advertisements. The celebrity hairstyle you are so obsessed with could be a result of too much Photoshop, a ton of hair extensions, or two hair stylists who spend hours to create a certain look.

Be smart and talk to your stylist about what is possible for your specific hair situation.

Ask what are the haircuts that are suitable for your hair texture, whether it’s getting and keeping up with hair extensions or getting a cut you want and that you can actually maintain.
